We're on spring break this week, a break from harvesting CSA shares. It turns out that we still have to harvest a little so we're all eating brassica raab right now on the farm, which is delicious, sweet and crunchy. By lightly harvesting this week we're encouraging more growth for Monday, and I'm hoping we'll have enough for everyone to get a sample of this spring treat in their first spring shares of the season. The honest truth is that I "design" the CSA shares in the winter for all four seasons, but until we actually pack the bags I'm never completely sure what will be in a share from week to week.
Raab like this comes around for just a few weeks every year. It's the flower bud of biennial brassicas, crops like kale, brussels sprouts and cabbage that need to go through a winter of cold weather before flowering. There are other crops, like broccoli and spring raab that are annuals and can produce more consistently, but my favorite is the spring raab from the biennials. Lets hope it keeps producing for a few weeks. The plants were a little weak from their tough winter so it's hard to tell how much we'll get. Whatever we do get will go into the CSA shares, at least after this week.
