We notice the weather every day. What to wear can be a real dilemma! Do we need a jacket? Will we need sunscreen? Will the weather affect our plans? Can we play outside? Can we have a picnic? Will the weather change today?
How would we describe the question, “What is the weather?” It can be said that the weather is the state of the Earth’s atmosphere at any given time or place. The atmosphere is the layer of gasses that surround the Earth. This layer is where clouds form. Clouds produce precipitation in the form of rain, or snow, or hail. Wind moves the clouds and the rain. Clouds also block the rays of the sun. The sun is the other critical component of the weather. Our weather changes all year long – these changes are called the seasons. How much direct sunlight a place gets and how long the sun shines on that place, determines the season. The cycle of seasons changes from summer to fall to winter to spring, every year. Over a long period of time, weather patterns in one place are called the climate. The study of weather and the atmosphere is called meteorology, and most people care about the weather each day!
