With the coming of warm weather and longer days, the blueberries are getting ready to burst into full bloom. The plants look healthy and, most likely due to the dry weather, seem to show no signs of fungal problems common at this time of year.
The farm received a scant 2.30 inches of rainfall this March as compared to 13.58 inches during 2012! If this trend continues, we will have to rely heavily on irrigation this year.
On one test plot of blueberries, we have tilled the ground in the aisles in order to plant a dense stand of Calendula flowers. The pretty orange and yellow flowers will be harvested for medicinal uses just prior to the blueberry harvest.

The five resident beehives on the property are literally buzzing with activity. The bees are currently concentrating on all the flowering trees in the area. By mid-April, we expect to get an additional twenty-four rental beehives on the farm. The apiary from whom we rent hives practices completely natural beekeeping and doesn't use any chemicals or pesticides.
When the blueberries are in full bloom, the sweet aroma in the fields can be intoxicating. All the domesticated honey bees plus the millions of native bumble bees and other pollinator species will be compelled to do what they do best -- collect nectar and pollinate the berries. The cycles of nature continue as always and we simply get out of the way and watch with awe...
