The farm received a scant 2.30 inches of rainfall this March as compared to 13.58 inches during 2012! If this trend continues, we will have to rely heavily on irrigation this year.
On one test plot of blueberries, we have tilled the ground in the aisles in order to plant a dense stand of Calendula flowers. The pretty orange and yellow flowers will be harvested for medicinal uses just prior to the blueberry harvest.
When the blueberries are in full bloom, the sweet aroma in the fields can be intoxicating. All the domesticated honey bees plus the millions of native bumble bees and other pollinator species will be compelled to do what they do best -- collect nectar and pollinate the berries.
