Diamond In The Rough

Hey everyone!  I'm messing around a bit with the format today because I couldn't decide which color scheme I liked best (courtesy of Karen), so you get to see them both!  What do you think?  The rigid foam we've been putting around the building really makes it pop doesn't it?  And, it keeps the inside nice and cool too so I'm not one to complain...except for when the sun was in the exact right spot and I found myself standing in a corner where the heat rays converged and turned the spot into an oven, I sure learned that lesson quick.  But, don't fear, because even with all my petitions to leave the gleaming death ray as it is, we will still be putting metal siding over it in the near future to make it match all the other buildings on the property.

Oh ya, and I don't know if you already heard it on the news or not, everybody is talking about it...We passed our framing inspection!!  All our hard work since March has paid off and we can now forge ahead and start insulating and move on to more finish carpentry stuff.  Woot! Go crew!

Also, here is a cool a little project that Dylan and I spent the better part of a day working on: figuring out how to make sure that the vent fan box doesn't leak into the kitchen when it rains.  In order to do this, we really had to "be the rain" and try to predict all the ways it could possibly flow, splash, drip, or any other liquidy verb, into the kitchen below and ruin somebody's day.  And this is what we came up with:

Pretty sleek, right?  Any water that makes it onto the roof above the box will flow down, hit a dam, get diverted, hit another dam, get diverted, and on and on until it eventually makes it onto the main roof and then down into the gutters.  How did we accomplish this you ask?  With a lot of shaping, finagling, and overlapping of strangely shaped pieces of metal until we got the finished product you see above.  After we put in the last screw I wanted to go get some buckets and really put it to the test, which we didn't end up doing, but we are confident that when the time comes Mr. and Mrs. H2O (yes, they're a couple) will see the work we did, realize that they are not welcome here and simply leave the premises quietly.  It's always been a mystery to me why roofs didn't just leak all the time, but since my childhood I've always been pretty openly supportive of all non-leaky roofs.  Now I have a great respect and understanding for the amount of true head scratching that goes into making it happen.
