Since I got to reflect on the past a little bit last week, I was thinking I could now take a chance to look forward. As someone who recently became a new parent, I feel like my stake in the future has become much greater than ever before. I wonder what kind of a future I can help provide for my son, and I wonder how raising him in/on/around the co-op will affect that future. But, since he's been born I wonder how anyone could ever raise a child without a whole community like this behind you. My wife and I have family in the Mid-West and it's been hard for everyone to be so far away. But with the number of aunts and uncles this little guy has here already, and the amount of support we get from them, and not to mention the food, how could you have a better start to growing up?
The future I'd like to envision for my child is one where our little community here in Sherwood is like a microcosm of the whole. Where people are valued over profits, and both the economy and ecology thrive. If we prove that what we are doing here works, and works well, then hopefully others will try too. With the majority of the farmland in the country ready to change hands within the next couple decades, maybe it will be the spread of smaller, ecologically diverse farms that saves us in the end and gives everybody the local food security and quality that they deserve. Things like that take time, but it's nice to know that everything we do here at Our Table, from planting our own seeds to meeting with local producers, is aimed at creating a future like that.
